Slumbering Self

Corinne Loxton

Slumbering Self, 2024 oil on canvas 91.5 x 152 cm

In 2024 I travelled to the Centre to paint and explore my relationship with the desert. The landforms and space were confronting, yet I felt drawn to deep gorge shadows, ghost gums standing serenely and the wide sky. At night I began to dream in brush marks of burnt sienna, magenta, cobalt blue and umber. Then strangely, in my dreams I embodied the mountain range. My body formed the bluffs and valleys of the ranges, I was the mountain, and it was me. This painting was made in response.
