Perpetual Junk Drawer

Ellie Chalmers-Robinson

Perpetual Junk Drawer, 2024 oil on linen 122 x 91 cm

When painting this work I was thinking about the visual cacophony of natural landscapes. In the way that junk drawers contain a chaotic assortment of worn, sentimental, broken, or potentially and occasionally useful items, natural landscapes generate and incorporate objects in a similar fashion. An eroded rock, a fallen branch, proliferating moss, a curl of bark; these types objects, each with a unique history and function, coalesce into a tangled visual cacophony, a perpetual junk drawer.
