Wake, 2024 oil on linen 91.5 x 91.5 cmI painted this work following an afternoon at Newcastle Harbour. The headland looked mammal-soft against the hulking maritime structures. An osprey fished below the cliff. CoaI ships came to take away dark-fuel mountains, painted two-tone like giant tattered flags. I wanted to capture the passage of time and sense of loss. Brushstrokes cut around the scene like the wake of a ship or a navigational warning sign. The title refers to wake in this sense, and equally to a wake for one who has passed.
